Javier Mascherano says Cristiano Ronaldo deserved to celebrate his 30th birthday even in the aftermath ofReal Madrid's shock 4-0 defeat to city rivals Atletico.
Images of Ronaldo partying with a number of his Madrid team-mates to mark his personal milestone emerged on the internet just hours after the loss, causing widespread uproar amongst the club's supporters.
The forward's agent Jorge Mendes has since come out in support of his client, while Portugal legend and Fifa candidate Luis Figo has also offered him his backing.
And Ronaldo has now received further endorsement of his actions from an unlikely source, with Barcelona midfielder Mascherano advising the public to understand that sportsmen also have personal lives.
He told RAC 1: "Everyone lives as he likes and I am not somebody who will tell somebody else how they should live their life.
"We are people, human beings. Often people forget that beyond being professionals and beyond being in front of a camera, we have personal lives as well and can live as we choose.
"Let's not forget that we are people and we have the right to live our life in the private sphere and people need to understand that."
Mascherano was talking after receiving the Leadership Ability award at Mundo Deportivo's annual awards ceremony on Monday night.
