Capital One Cup: Liverpool survived after penalty shoot out.

Liverpool secured their passage to the last-16 of the League Cup after a sensational 14-13 penalty shootout over Middlesbrough.

The hosts came into the game off the back of three defeats in their last five games, though Jordan Rossiter handed them the perfect start just 10 minutes in at Anfield.

Boro goalkeeper Jamal Blackman - on loan from Chelsea - raced off his line after Kenneth Omeruo failed to deal with a long ball, and while the youngster saved Rickie Lambert's initial shot, Rossiter was able to fire into an empty net from 35 yards.

Rodgers' side were unable to extend their lead though, and the visitors were level just past the hour mark after Adam Reach nodded in Grant Leadbitter's fine cross.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in normal time, but Suso drilled a low effort through a wall of bodies with 11 minutes to play after some neat work by Mario Balotelli for what the hosts thought would be the winning goal.

Their Championship visitors had other ideas, though, and Patrick Bamford netted from the spot in injury time of extra time after being felled by Kolo Toure to send the game to a shootout.

Bamford then missed Boro's first spot-kick, but Raheem Sterling miss ensured a mammoth shootout in which both keepers were forced to take - and score.

With all 11 players from both sides having taken, the shootout went to sudden-death penalties, with Adomah sending the vital effort wide to put the hosts through.
