The Red Devils made it three straight Premier League victories for the first time since December to maintain hold of the fourth and final Champions League berth for the next campaign.
And the usually hard-to-please Dutch manager was delighted with United’s performance, saying after the full-time whistle: "We dominated the game from the first minute to the last minute today.
"It was our best match of the season when you see the full 90 minutes. We have dominated, we have created many chances, and we do not give any chances away, a clean sheet again, so I think we are going in the right way.
Meanwhile, Van Gaal also had words of praise for his compatriot Robin van Persie after the Netherlands international rounded off the scoring at the Theatre of Dreams by netting the home team's third of the afternoon, while also bringing to an end a recent poor run in front of goal.
"This is the moment now, I think you have to work hard to improve, and the players are doing that and OK, it is nice that we have won three times in a row, but we have to improve our playing style and today we have improved. And that is the most important thing, and that the victories are coming."
"It was a beautiful goal from Van Persie, he scored three goals already on the training ground this week, so I had a good feeling for him," said Van Gaal.
"But of course a striker always needs a goal and I am very happy for him that he made this goal."
