Klinsmann calls in veterans, fresh faces for USA friendlies

USA are set to face Colombia at Craven Cottage in London on 14 November, followed by a trip to Dublin four days later to take on Republic of Ireland, which will be as the Americans' final two matches of an eventful 2014. Jurgen Klinsmann named his 25-man squad for the two games on
Monday.

And the roster features 16 members of USA’s 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ side, who will pair up with several fresh faces who are newcomers to international football.
Brad Guzan, who looks primed to take on the No1 role during Tim Howard’s self-prescribed year-long break from international duty, leads a group of four goalkeepers, the other three representing

Major League Soccer clubs. DaMarcus Beasley leads an experienced backline alongside Jermaine Jones, who has recently been playing as a centre-back for Klinsmann despite earning his reputation as an engine room in the midfield.

Lee Nguyen has earned his first call up into the senior USA squad since 2007 after an impressive 18-goal season with New England Revolution, whom he has led into the Eastern Conference finals in MLS. Jozy Altidore and Chris Wondolowski provide the firepower up front, though four youngsters looking to make a name for themselves on the international scene join the World Cup duo.

Miguel Ibarra, who plays for Minnesota United in the North American Soccer League – USA’s second division – earned his first cap against Honduras in October, is joined by Stanford University and Seattle Sounders youth academy product Jordan Morris, 1860 Munich’s Bobby Wood and Utrecht’s Rubio Rubin. The oldest of the foursome, Ibarra, is 24 years old, while Rubin is six years younger.

Klinsmann will likely use the friendlies as another opportunity for the younger players to get a taste of international experience before focus shifts to the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2015. Competing against Colombia and Republic of Ireland to round out a year, which saw the Stars and Stripes reach the Round of 16 at Brazil 2014, should set a good precedent as USA look to defend their regional title against the likes of Mexico and Costa Rica next summer.
