Super Falcons multi-award winning striker, Asisat Oshoala was on Thursday named the 2014 African Women Player of the Year and best under 20 player during the award ceremony in Lagos Nigeria.
The Rivers Angels forward defeated compatriot, Desire Oparanozie and Cameroonian goalkeeper, Annette Ngo Ndom for the coveted award in the colourful yearly awards ceremony in Lagos.
Oshoala,who was the best player and highest goal scorer at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup. She was also best player and second top goalscorer with the Super Falcons team who won the 2014 African Women’s Championship.
Oshoala found success as a forward for Nigeria’s youth teams but made most of her early appearances for the senior national team as an attacking midfielder. She was nicknamed “Seedorf” after male footballer Clarence Seedorf.
Asisat's outstanding performance at the 2014 Fifa Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada where she won the Golden ball and Golden boot awards with stunning seven goals as well as her eye-catching feat at the 2014 Africa Women Championship (AWC) where she picked the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and silver boot award made her the overwhelming choice for the award.
