Manchester United believe they have made a significant breakthrough in their pursuit of Real Madrid’s winger Ángel di María.
United, who have been linked all summer with a deal to sign the 26-year-old Argentina international, are understood to be in advanced talks over a deal worth more than £48m.
On Thursday the Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed Di María had turned down the offer of a new contract. “Di María asked to go,” he said. “The player has to look for a solution. He’s a Real Madrid player and until 31 August, as I’ve already said, anything can happen.”
United were facing competition for Di Maria’s signature from Paris Saint-German, who were reportedly prepared to pay him €8m (£6.4m) a year, but it is understood he was more tempted by a move to Old Trafford and the No7 shirt worn by George Best and Eric Cantona.
